For breast revision surgery, Dr. Leo Otake is a specialists in modifying or correcting prior cosmetic or reconstructive breast surgery. Many times, patients are interested in breast revision surgery but do not know what it involves and where to start. We are here to guide you through the process.

What Is Breast Revision Surgery?

Breast revision is a surgical procedure designed to correct unsatisfactory results from previous breast enhancement, reduction, or restorative surgery. This revision surgery can improve the size, shape, and symmetry of the breasts. Depending on your condition, breast revision surgery may involve the removal or replacement of your current breast implant(s).

A breast revision can be performed for various reasons, including medical and cosmetic conditions. Patients may elect to have breast revision to change the size or type of their implants or correct complications that resulted from prior breast surgery. Our ultimate goal is to restore a youthful appearance and natural breast contour, as well as improving self-image and confidence. Whatever the reason, Dr. Leo Otake takes time and care when evaluating patients’ needs, that suit each person’s expectations. Safe and satisfying outcomes are essential, and we strive to ensure the best possible end results for each of our patients.

Reasons for Breast Revision

A breast revision may be performed for medical conditions and cosmetic reasons. Surgical procedures can be used to correct the following breast conditions.

  • Breast Shape and Implant Shift– Poor breast shape can happen as a result of surgical complications or from a poor surgical technique used during a previous procedure. Additional changes can occur when implants drop considerably from the initial position. This can cause the implant to appear low on the chest while the nipple looks too high. This condition is sometimes referred to as “bottoming out.” Some women experience a condition in which the breasts move toward the midline of the chest and form a single breast with the appearance of no cleavage. This can occur as a result of a natural deformity of the breast tissue (Symmastia) or as a result of previous breast surgery (Synmastia).

  • Implant Rupture or Leakage– Many older breast implants have been found to eventually fail. They may leak contents or even rupture. If this happens with a saline implant, obvious changes occur, and the breast appears to deflate. If a rupture or leakage occurs with a silicone implant, immediate changes are less obvious. This condition must be confirmed by an MRI and may not be apparent until a mammogram is performed or the patient experiences side effects. When a silicone implant leaks or ruptures, the implant will need to be removed and the patient may have a required waiting time before a replacement implant can be inserted.

  • Rippling and Wrinkling– This condition tends to occur more frequently with individuals that have insufficient natural breast tissue at the time of surgery to cover a breast implant or when an implant that is too large for the breast tissue is inserted. With this condition, the edge of the implant can be seen and felt on the surface of the breast, giving it an appearance of rippling or wrinkling.
  • Preplanned Revisions– Many individuals that have a breast reduction or mastectomy surgery will be advised that they will (or may) need additional breast revision surgeries to achieve the desired appearance.

What You Should Know About Breast Revision Surgery?

With Dr. Leo Otake, breast revision surgery is generally performed with general anesthesia in our private surgical suite. The length of the surgical procedure will depend on the type of revision required but typically can take between as little as 30 minutes to as long as two and a half hours.

Recovery time also depends on the type of surgery performed. Most patients can typically expect to return to work within 1 to 2 weeks. It is during this time that visible swelling and bruising should subside, and pain should be manageable with over-the-counter medications (with avoidance of vigorous activities).

Over the next few months, the shape of your breasts may change, and final results may not be immediately visible. To ensure proper healing, patients should attend all follow-up appointments.
